Fischbachau lies in the Leitzach valley, in the Mangfall mountains – the easternmost part of the Bavarian Alpine foothills. This is where hikes begin that range from gentle alpine paths to summits.
The Breitenstein
At 1,622 metres the Breitenstein dominates the view above the valley. From Birkenstein you can be at the top in about two and a half hours. On the western side the Breitensteiner Fensterl opens up, a rock arch at around 1,350 metres that is listed as a geotope and natural monument.
A popular circuit leads via the Kesselalm and the Schwaigeralm. It is a good eight kilometres long and demanding – allow around four hours.
Birkenstein
At the starting point stands the pilgrimage chapel of the Assumption. It was built in 1710 as a replica of the Holy House of Loreto; the ensemble also includes a small convent, an open-air altar and a crucifixion group.
More destinations
Quieter than the Breitenstein is the Schweinsberg (1,514 m). For a shorter hike, try the Schwarzenberg (1,187 m), a good hour from Hundham. The Wendelstein (1,838 m) can be reached on foot from Birkenstein in about three to three and a half hours – or by rack railway or cable car.
In winter
You can ski in the Sudelfeld ski area near Bayrischzell and at Lake Spitzingsee.
Good to know
Alpine huts and inns have different opening times, and many only open in summer. Check the current times and the weather before your hike.
For your days in the Leitzach valley: our apartment Breitenstein sleeps up to six adults or eight people with children.
