A weekend in Deidesheim: old town, vineyards and festivals

Marktplatz in Deidesheim mit Sonnenschirmen vor dem Deidesheimer Hof

Deidesheim is small enough to explore on foot – and still has enough to offer for a full weekend. A few suggestions for your visit to the German Wine Route.

Arriving in the old town

The heart of the town is the market square with the historic town hall: built in 1532, rebuilt in Baroque style after the War of the Palatine Succession and graced with an outdoor staircase from 1724. Inside, the Museum of Wine Culture shows how wine is grown, made and tasted. Opening hours vary with the season – the tourist information office on Bahnhofstraße can help.

Close by are the parish church of St Ulrich and Deidesheim Castle, which grew out of a medieval moated castle.

Among the vines

Almost 500 hectares of vines surround Deidesheim. Many vineyards have a long history: Kieselberg is mentioned as early as 1234, Leinhöhle in 1310. The vineyards start right at the edge of town.

By the way: our apartments in Deidesheim are named after these vineyards – from Grainhübel to Paradiesgarten.

Festivals through the year

On the Tuesday after Whitsun Deidesheim auctions a billy goat – a tradition documented since 1404. The town of Lambrecht supplies it in return for old grazing rights in the Deidesheim forest. In August the town celebrates the Deidesheim wine fair on the second and third weekends. If you prefer things quieter, plan your visit outside the festival days.

For rainy days

The German Museum of Film and Photo Technology on Weinstraße has a large collection of historic film and photo cameras.

Getting here

By train you reach Deidesheim on the Neustadt–Bad Dürkheim line, by car via the A65, Deidesheim exit.
